Actor Rick Hurst passed away at the age of 79. He was most remembered for his role as Deputy Cletus Hogg in the popular sitcom "The Dukes of Hazzard."
His co-star Ben Jones confirmed his death on
Thursday in a note posted on the Cooter’s Place museum’s Facebook page, which
is devoted to the show.
"That Rick Hurst died this afternoon does not
feel right. As the saying goes, it is "harder to digest" when
something so unexpected occurs, Jones wrote.
"I have known Rick for more than 45 years, and
during that time, he never failed to make me laugh or smile. He was a
professional comedian, to be sure, but his heart was as wide as Texas, he
continued.
When Hurst joined the cast of "Dukes of
Hazzard," Jones said, "Everything clicked." Jones described
Hurst as a brilliant actor, splendidly funny, and a wonderfully helpful
colleague.
He blended in
perfectly and, up until this afternoon, never ceased to make people smile. And
he will keep making us laugh since the Dukes are still playing all over the
world!” he wrote.
In reference to other deceased "Dukes of
Hazzard" cast members, he remarked, "I do not know about y'all, but I
believe in an afterlife, and I can imagine Rick up there in Heaven, with Jimmy
Best, Sorrell Booke, and Denver Pyle, putting on the funniest performance
inside those Pearly Gates."
Early in his acting career, Hurst had some success,
including 24 episodes of the television series "On the Rocks" from
1975 to 1976. However, it was "The Dukes of Hazzard," which follows
the fast-driving Duke brothers as they try to elude the law in the made-up
county of Hazzard, that made him famous.
From 1979 until 1982, Hurst starred in 55 episodes
of the CBS series before departing to star in "Amanda's," a US
adaptation of the well-liked British television series "Fawlty
Towers."
He starred in a number of TV series and motion
pictures in the ensuing decades, with his final appearance in a 2016 TV short
titled "B My Guest."
