HBO’s Harry Potter Series Finds Its Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, and More — Full Cast Revealed So Far
After months of speculation and anticipation, HBO has officially confirmed the first major casting announcements for its upcoming Harry Potter television series. The network revealed the names of six actors who will bring some of Hogwarts' most iconic characters to life in what’s being described as a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series.

Leading the magical lineup is Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor John Lithgow (3rd Rock From the Sun), who has been cast as the wise and powerful Albus Dumbledore. Lithgow had previously hinted at his involvement earlier this year, and now it’s officially confirmed.
Joining him at Hogwarts are:
Janet McTeer (Ozark) as the stern yet caring Professor Minerva McGonagall, the Transfiguration teacher and Deputy Headmistress.
Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) as the complex and brooding Professor Severus Snape, Hogwarts’ Potions Master.
Nick Frost (Into the Badlands) as the lovable half-giant Rubeus Hagrid, keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts.
On the recurring cast side:
Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) will portray the ever-grumpy caretaker Argus Filch.
Luke Thallon, a rising talent from the British stage, has been cast as the nervous Professor Quirinus Quirrell, who teaches Defense Against the Dark Arts in Harry’s first year.
In a joint statement, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod expressed their excitement:
“We are thrilled to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon, and Paul Whitehouse. These are extraordinary talents, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to life in a new and exciting way.”
Production on HBO’s Harry Potter series is set to begin in Summer 2025, with the series aiming to stay true to the rich detail and emotional depth of the original books. While no official premiere date has been announced, the show could potentially debut as late as 2027.
The casting of the franchise’s central trio — Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger — is still underway. A casting call for young actors between the ages of 9 and 11 was issued last September, suggesting the series will begin with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and follow the books closely across multiple seasons.
